The Department of Foreign Languages, Sanjiang University was founded in 1992, initially offering the major in Business English, which was one of the first four majors set up in the university. In 1996, the major in Business Japanese was added. In 2000, the Department of Foreign Languages was dissolved, and the English Department and the Japanese Department were respectively established. In 2012, School of Foreign Languages was founded. In 2022, the Alibaba International Station Digital Trade School and the Alibaba International Station Digital Trade Talent Center were created. In 2023, the major in Cross-border E-commerce was established. The English and Japanese majors have become first-class majors in Jiangsu Province, and the Translation course has been recognized as a national first-class course.

The school comprises four teaching units: the English Department, the Japanese Department, the Cross-border E-commerce Department, and the Foreign Language Department. It offers three undergraduate majors: English, Japanese, and Cross-border E-commerce. The Cross-border E-commerce major was the first of its kind established nationwide. Currently, there are approximately 1,500 students enrolled. School of Foreign Languages also undertakes the task of teaching foreign languages to over 20,000 undergraduate non-English majors across the university.

The school boasts a strong faculty with rigorous academic standards, having developed a unique teaching management system. There are currently 84 full-time faculty members, including 4 British and Japanese teachers, among whom are 7 professors and 29 associate professors. Over 95% of the faculty hold doctoral or master's degrees.

School of Foreign Languages is equipped with a translation training center, a cross-border e-commerce training center, a webcasting center, and more than 10 practical training and internship centers for students. It emphasizes the cultivation of students' foreign language skills, business competence, and practical abilities to meet the needs of national economic development and societal demands. So far, it has nurtured a large number of foreign language professionals and cross-border e-commerce talents with solid professional knowledge, proficient language skills, independent working capabilities, and comprehensive qualities. The employment rate has consistently remained above 96%, and the admission rate for postgraduate examinations has ranked among the top in the university for several consecutive years, earning high recognition from both society and the educational community. The pass rate for the College English Test (CET) Band 4 and Band 6 is renowned among applied institutions of higher learning.

In recent years, the faculty of School of Foreign Languages have dedicated themselves to research, continuously exploring fields such as foreign literature, linguistics, applied linguistics, pedagogy, culture, translation, cross-border e-commerce, college foreign language teaching, and artificial intelligence applications. They have successfully applied for over 200 research projects funded by the National Social Science Fund, Provincial Social Science Fund, Provincial Department of Education, Provincial Higher Education Association, Provincial Federation of Social Sciences, and other institutions. The school possesses planning textbooks for Jiangsu Province's 14th Five-Year Plan and the exemplary case award for the English major in curriculum-based ideological and political education in Jiangsu Province, and has published over 300 research papers in domestic and international academic journals. It has also won numerous awards, including over 100 national and provincial micro-lecture competition awards, university outstanding teaching achievement awards, the top, first, second, and third prizes in provincial and university-level teaching ability competitions, provincial Challenge Cup competition awards, and the first, second, and third prizes for provincial outstanding bachelor’s theses. The achievements of our students in various academic competitions at all levels are even more numerous.

The school places great emphasis on international exchanges and cooperation, with increasingly frequent interactions with foreign universities such as the University of Hawaii in the United States, the University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom, and Aichi Bunkyo University in Japan. Multiple programs have been launched, including 3+1 dual bachelor's degrees, 3+2 consecutive bachelor's and master's degrees, student exchanges, and faculty visits, continuously improving the quality of student cultivation.
